San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Academy

The San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Academy (Academy) is located at the San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute (Institute) on the campus of Miramar College.

Police Officers Doing CrunchesThe Institute provides law enforcement training and education for agencies in 18 incorporated cities, including the Oceanside Police Department, the State University Police, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the San Diego County Probation Department, San Diego Police Department, San Diego Port Authority, the Department of Insurance, the Harbor Police Department, and the Community College District Police. Limited training is conducted for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office and the federal agency local offices of the DEA, FBI, INS, and Border Patrol.

Under a regionalized structure, law enforcement recruits from every agency in San Diego County and beyond attend courses at the Academy. The Oceanside Police Department has one officer assigned to the Academy in conjunction with members of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, San Diego Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies.

Staff and faculty work closely with the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), local agency users, and the Community College District to ensure standardization and the highest level of professional training. As stakeholders, our regional agency users, Academy staff, and the College District have dedicated themselves to working cooperatively to meet that goal.

The Academy provides recruits with the skills, practical training, and discipline to prepare them for a long and rewarding career in law enforcement.

Recruits/students attend the Academy Monday through Friday, eight hours a day, for 25 weeks. Students attend classroom lectures and participate in technical skills training throughout this period. Students must successfully pass POST examinations during the training to continue and successfully complete the Academy program. Upon graduation, recruits receive a completion certificate from the Institute at Miramar College.

The 25-week Basic Course is currently certified at Miramar College as a 27.5 unit course. Successful completion results in the awarding of a California Basic POST certificate when combined with one year of law enforcement service.
